I am so proud to be part of the Fine Arts Program at Channelview High School.
Being an educator is more than a job, it is a commitment and true calling. I found my love for teaching while substituting for 13 years. Teaching has become one of the most fulfilling and challenging endeavors of my life. Instilling my commitment and passion for Fine Arts education in the classroom gives me no greater joy.
Biography of Mary Edwards Start
Mary Edwards Start received her Bachelors degree in Applied Design with her focus on digital media and photography. She also received an Associates in Fine Arts from Lee College in Baytown, Texas. During her career at Lee College she received a Grant to travel throughout China. Her portraits of the peoples of China earned Mary her first solo exhibit. Faces of China. She captured the heart of China through her dignified portraits and photographs, receiving positive reviews for sustaining a personal kinship and respect between her and her love for humanity. While earning her Bachelors in Applied Design, she has kept her love for traveling and is currently working on capturing different cultures and experiences in a new series, Artists around the World. Mary is also a diverse artist and has produced many successful paintings. These have been exhibited in Houston area Gallery's as well as Clear Lake and Baytown. In 2009, she was selected for publication in Bayouspere, published by The University of Houston - Clear Lake in Digital Media. Her digital work for Bayouspere achieved a publication cover.
Artist Statement
Mary Start’s pieces often capture the spirit and essences of other human beings from both the mediums of photography and painting. Her work has been described by Mary as “a heartfelt joy in which every piece forever changes her.” It is seldom easy to make a truly memorable work, but with her passion for the world around her, even the moments of doubt do not go away with success, because she raises the bar for her work. In an early career, the notion of constant growth in Mary’s work was intimidating, but an accepted reality. This reality makes Mary’s continuous growth and maturity in her skill and love for her art possible.
